AI agents are the biggest shift in everyday software right now. A chatbot answers a question; an agent takes a goal, works out the steps, uses your tools and hands back a finished result: a keyword plan, a month of social posts, a privacy policy, a reply to a customer. For a small business with no marketing team, that is the difference between “AI is interesting” and “AI did three hours of my work this morning”.
This guide explains what AI agents are in plain words, the jobs they already do well for small businesses, the two ways to get them (a ready-made agent app or agents you host yourself), what each really costs, and the limits you should know before you trust one with your business.

The short answer
- What an AI agent is: AI that completes a task end to end, asks you the questions it needs, uses connected apps and remembers your business between sessions.
- Easiest way to start: a ready-made agent app such as Hostinger Agent. It has a 7-day free trial with 100 credits and no card, then costs $6.99 a month on a 12-month plan.
- For developers and tinkerers: self-hosted agents (Agent Zero, Dify, Hermes Agent, n8n) on a VPS, from $8.99 a month for a KVM 2 server, plus the cost of the AI model you connect.
- Golden rule: agents draft, you approve. Check facts, prices and anything legal before it goes public.
What is an AI agent, in plain words?
Think of the difference between asking a friend “how do I do keyword research?” and asking an assistant “do my keyword research”. A chatbot gives you an answer and waits for the next prompt. An agent:
- Starts from a goal (“plan next month’s Instagram posts”).
- Asks what it needs (your product, audience, tone, posting days).
- Uses tools: web research, your calendar, your email, your documents, your website data.
- Remembers context, so the next task already knows your business.
- Delivers a finished result you can publish, send or use, instead of a wall of advice.
That is why the trend has moved from “which chatbot is smartest” to “which agent can actually finish the job”. The newest tools come with ready-made skills (step-by-step task templates), connections to everyday apps such as Gmail, Notion, Google Drive or WhatsApp, and specialised experts instead of one general assistant.
10 jobs AI agents already do well for a small business
| Job | What the agent hands you |
|---|---|
| Keyword research | A list of searches your customers use, grouped by intent, with page ideas |
| SEO blog posts | A structured draft with headings and FAQs, ready for your edits |
| Social media calendar | A month of posts in your brand voice, with captions and hashtags |
| Website copy | Home, about and product page text that matches your offer |
| Marketing plan | Channels worth your time, a budget split and a simple schedule |
| Emails and newsletters | Welcome, follow-up and promotion emails |
| Lead lists and outreach | Prospect lists and first-contact messages to review |
| Pricing review | A check of your prices against your costs and competitors |
| Policies | A first draft of a privacy policy or terms of service |
| Business plan and pitch | Honest feedback on the idea, a plan outline and an elevator pitch |
Most of these come straight from the skills list of Hostinger Agent (social posts, marketing content, SEO blog posts, website copy, leads, emails, privacy policy and pricing review), but the same jobs apply to any good agent tool.
Two ways to get AI agents
| Ready-made agent app | Self-hosted agents on a VPS | |
|---|---|---|
| Example | Hostinger Agent | Agent Zero, Dify, Hermes Agent, n8n |
| Setup time | Minutes, in the browser or WhatsApp | An hour or more; some server skills needed |
| Monthly cost | From $6.99 (12 months) | From $8.99 for the server + AI model usage |
| Customisation | Ready-made experts and skills | Build any workflow you can imagine |
| Who runs it | Hostinger | You (updates, security, backups) |
| Best for | Owners who want results, not tools | Developers, agencies, automation fans |

Option 2: self-hosted AI agents on a Hostinger VPS
If you want full control, you can run open-source agents on your own server. Hostinger’s VPS installer offers one-click templates for several of today’s trending agent tools:

- Agent Zero: an open-source agent framework with multi-agent cooperation and persistent memory.
- Dify: build your own AI apps with document search (RAG), agents and workflows.
- Hermes Agent: a self-improving agent with a web admin panel and multi-platform messaging.
- n8n: visual automation; connect your shop, email and spreadsheets and let AI steps run inside the workflow.
A KVM 2 server (2 vCPU, 8 GB RAM) cost $8.99 a month on a 24-month term, and is the size we suggest for a few agents or an n8n instance. Remember the second bill: most self-hosted agents call an AI model through an API key from a provider such as OpenAI, Anthropic or Google, and that usage is paid separately. Our Hostinger VPS review covers the plans in detail, or see VPS prices at Hostinger.
Limits and safety: what to check before you trust an agent
- Review before you publish. Agents can be confidently wrong about facts, prices and dates. Read everything that goes out under your name.
- Legal drafts are drafts. A generated privacy policy is a good start; have it checked if you handle customer data or sell abroad.
- Connect only what the task needs. Give an agent access to your calendar or inbox only when it has a job there, and remove access you no longer use.
- Keep customer data private. Do not paste payment details or ID numbers into any AI tool.
- Watch your credits or API bill. Long research tasks use more. Check usage after the first week.
- Keep a human in the loop for anything that sends money, emails customers or changes your website.
Which option should you choose?
- You run a small business and want time back: Hostinger Agent. Start with the free trial, then the 12-month plan.
- You already use many apps and want them to work together: n8n on a VPS, with AI steps inside your workflows.
- You are a developer or agency: Agent Zero, Dify or Hermes Agent on a VPS for client projects.
- You only need help writing now and then: start with the free trial of an agent app before paying for a server.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between an AI agent and ChatGPT?
A general chatbot answers what you ask and waits for the next prompt. An agent works toward a goal: it asks the questions it needs, uses connected tools and delivers a finished result. Hostinger describes its agents as pre-trained for specific business areas and guided by ready-made skills, so you do not need to write perfect prompts.
How much does Hostinger Agent cost?
On October 18, 2026, it was $6.99 a month on a 12-month plan, $7.99 on 3 months and $9.99 on 1 month. It renews at $8.99 a month.
Is there a free trial?
Yes. Hostinger offered a 7-day free trial with 100 credits, all experts, all skills and all features, with no card needed.
Can I use AI agents through WhatsApp?
Hostinger Agent can run from WhatsApp: you connect your apps and give tasks in a WhatsApp chat. Self-hosted options such as Hermes Agent also support messaging platforms.
Do self-hosted agents cost more than an agent app?
Often, yes. You pay for the server (from $8.99 a month for KVM 2) and for the AI model usage, and you maintain the server yourself. In return you get full control and can build custom workflows.
