Showing Which Product Variations Are Actually in Stock

WooCommerce’s default variable-product form reveals availability one selection at a time. A shopper picks a colour, picks a size, and only then learns it is out of stock — then repeats, guessing. On a product with four colours and five sizes that is twenty clicks to find out what the shop could simply have shown.

Build the matrix once, read it twice

We compute a compact table of every variation on the product: its attribute combination, whether it is in stock, and its price. That table is emitted alongside the native variation form and reused by the quick view modal, so the product page and the grid pop-up cannot disagree about availability.

With that table available to the page, unavailable options can be marked visually the moment a first attribute is chosen, rather than announced after the fact.

Two details that decide whether it works

WooCommerce allows a variation to leave an attribute empty, which means “any” — one row that matches every option for that attribute. Treating an empty value as a literal value instead of a wildcard produces a matrix that marks perfectly orderable combinations as unavailable, which is worse than showing nothing.

The second is a ceiling. A product with hundreds of variations would push a large table into every page load for a handful of shoppers who will never see all of it. Past a sensible limit the matrix is simply not built and the native form behaves as it always did — a graceful degrade rather than a slow page.

Key takeaways

  • Availability is information the shopper should have before choosing, not after.
  • Compute it once and let every surface — product page, quick view — read the same table.
  • An empty variation attribute means “any”. Handle the wildcard or you will hide valid combinations.
  • Cap the work on extreme products and fall back to default behaviour instead of shipping a slow page.
