For a store without a dedicated column for it, that ID typically ends up scattered across a notebook, a separate spreadsheet, or a chat history — anywhere except the order itself.
A column that matches an existing pattern
Rather than inventing a new interaction style, we reused the same locked-value-plus-“Change”-link pattern already built for the fulfilment stage picker, adapted for free text instead of a fixed set of options. An empty row shows a text input and a Save button; once a value is entered, it collapses to plain text with a small “Change” link beside it. Pressing Enter saves directly, without requiring a separate click on the Save button.
The column sits immediately next to the existing courier-dispatch column in the orders list, so the two related pieces of information — “was this sent to the courier” and “what’s its tracking reference” — are visually adjacent rather than scattered across the table.
Why consistency mattered more than novelty here
It would have been just as easy to build this as a simple always-editable text field. We didn’t, because an orders list with several different interaction patterns for similar-looking data is harder to learn and harder to trust at a glance. Reusing the exact same collapse-to-value, reopen-on-click pattern already established elsewhere in the admin means staff only had to learn it once.
